New Hollywood String Quartet
The New Hollywood String Quartet had its debut concert in Los Angeles on Jan. 9, 2001 and has been performing to critical acclaim ever since. Inspired by the great Hollywood String Quartet from over half a century ago, the current members of the NHSQ are likewise premiere performers of their generation. Individually, and together as one of the top string quartets in Southern California, they are well known guests at many of the most prestigious concert series in Los Angeles and its environs.
It’s members reside in Los Angeles and have recorded hundreds of film scores, are members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and have decades of chamber music experience between them. The NHSQ was featured on the Grammy Nominated Disc, “Passing Through” performing Gernot Wolfgang’s “String Theory” for String Quartet. They’re most recent recording was for Jeff Beal’s newest album The Paper Lined Shack -’Things Unseen’ for String Quartet.
In the summer of 2019 the NHSQ, Quartet in Residence at the Restoration Concert Series, launched their inaugural summer festival entitled “Summer of Brahms Chamber Music Festival”. To incredible critical acclaim and capacity audiences the NHSQ presented all twenty-five of the instrumental chamber works of Johannes Brahms in collaboration with some of the world’s most renowned chamber musicians.
In December of 2021, the NHSQ presented the “Vienna Holiday Concerts”. The Three day festival showcased some of the most celebrated chamber music works of Mozart and Schubert. Josef Woodward of the Classical Voice wrote: “At the Huntington, the NHSQ exuded a refined and luminous ensemble presence in keeping with its growing reputation, 20 years into its history.
In July of 2022 the NHSQ and the Da Camera Society presented the Summer of Beethoven. These four concerts presented some of the best of Beethoven’s vast chamber music output, showcasing repertoire from each of his compositional periods, to convey the arc of his evolution as a composer.
The 2023 Summer of Paris Chamber Music Festival showcased the chamber music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Both of these French composers were at the forefront of transforming musical expression at the early part of the 20th century. Their stunning legacy continues to shape our musical landscape to this very day.
The 2024 the Summer of Bohemia Chamber Music Festival presented four concerts that featured the extraordinary music of Antonin Dvořák, Leos Janàček, Ernst von Dohnányi, Josef Suk, Bedřich Smetana and Bohuslav Martinů. All of these composers were influenced by Bohemian folk music. The great achievement of these composers was to join the warmth, joy and optimism of Native Czech music to the great classical forms developed by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Not unlike Johannes Brahms, these composers used their cultural heritage to guide and infuse their compositions with the unique melodies and harmonies of their countrymen.
